Artist’s Statement

Tahirih and Gabriel live on Galiano Island, BC, where they handcraft hardwood jewellery using local and exotic woods from around the world.

Tahirih grew up on the Galiano. She studied visual arts in Los Angeles, and has since then continued her education with Gabriel, learning a broad spectrum of fine woodworking skills.

Gabriel is from the Fraser Valley where he began his woodworking career. He moved to Galiano to become a fine woodworker's apprentice. In the six years of training, he learned the art of precision joinery, custom design, and fine finishing carpentry.

Tahirih and Gabriel formed Solomon Woodworks in 2002, and have since shown their work across Canada. Together they are inspired by the wild nature of Galiano Island; in a thick slab of rough timber or jagged wind-fall, thier workmanship brings forth the art beneath the surface, revealing a smoothly polished piece that reflects the grace and elegance wood is renowned for.
