Artist’s
Statement
Artistic woodturning is a wonderful medium for creative expression and personal exploration.
The maker prepares a rough blank of wood. Then with vision, forethought
and controlled skill, he removes material selectively to arrive at the
chosen form. This “subtractive” process produces
wonderfully flowing, rounded shapes in harmony with the rich warmth,
colour and figure of the material itself.
At all times throughout the process, the maker's eyes and mind are
focused on the shape, the form, the volume, the space and the
relationship of the elements as the lathe-mounted piece revolves at a
blurring pace before him. All these elements are totally within his
control, at the tip of the tool within his hand. All he sees is the
piece and the process; nothing else.
Not content with the “subtractive” process, the maker
brings other elements to the lathe- turned form: metal, fire, friction,
abrasion, contrasting materials and techniques tastefully, precisely
and harmoniously applied; an “additive” process, crafting a
greater expression, a bolder statement.
The maker's wish is that those who view his work will allow themselves
a slip of time and space of mind to focus on his work just as he has at
the lathe: to appreciate the material, the form and the elements he has
crafted for them, drawn from his unique vision.
Original objects from the lathe originate within the maker; gaze upon the work, peer within the artist.
