Susan Ball
Artist’s
Bio
Born and raised on the prairies of Saskatchewan, Susan has moved steadily westward since graduating with a natural science degree in 1987. Now settled in Vancouver, she has rediscovered early passions for color, texture, and creating imagery. These passions were reinforced in 2002, by a workshop introduction to the dye vat. An obsession with dyeing resulted. This, in turn, led her to further studies via the Textile Arts Program at Capilano College, North Vancouver.
Susan makes mainly functional pieces, combining dyed fabric with imagery produced by lino cuts, stencils, monoprints and image transfer processes onto cloth. She is currently experimenting with free motion machine embroidery as a way to enhance these images.
The dye process appeals to the scientist in her. Now, through the art of surface design, the scientist and the artist meet. So far it is a happy relationship.
