Artists' Bios

Sandra Ramos was born in Seoul, South Korea and moved to Canada when she was five years old. She lived in Montréal and Toronto most of her life and always had an artistic flare since childhood. After University she worked and traveled extensively in Japan and in other parts of Asia studying the traditional designs.

She has studied fine arts and design (graphic and industrial design) at Concordia University in Montréal, Québec. She has studied with Sam Kwan at Capilano College and with Mas Funo in North Vancouver. She has been working with clay since 1998. She has participated and organized many ceramics workshops in British Columbia.

Sandra’s primary interest is in creating functional work. She likes her pots to have the simplicity of form and a sculptural presence. In the process of creating her pottery she throws and alters the shapes of her work. She works with the richness of textures and movement of each of her creations. She has experimented with reduction, raku, salt, and wood firing. But now she mainly creates wood/salt fired pottery. She prefers the last three types of firings because of the challenge they present and the element of surprise they create.
