Marcus Bowcott

Artist’s Bio

Marcus has been working for the past three years on a series of sculptures and paintings focusing on luxury cars, SUVs, and military vehicles that have been redesigned for civilian use. Billions and billions of dollars are spent every year developing and maintaining these mechanical wonders. They are lovingly displayed on the billboards we see as we drive by and in the magazines we read. Automobiles are repeatedly presented as fetish objects on our television screens and in the movies we watch. These vehicles are symbols of wealth and power.

Our society exists in relation to the dominant political presence of the United States of America. The United States has become an empire, the epicenter of the Military Industrial Complex. It is with this in mind that he has named these objects after the current President of the United States, the "Commander in Chief" George W. Bush. "Empires and dynasties come and go, so in order to convey this simple truth, I have placed icons from other empires along with President Bush."

Marcus holds a Master of Arts Degree from the Royal College of Art in London, England. He has received multiple Arts Council and foundation grants as well as exhibiting his work in British Columbia, Alberta and Ontario. The artist wishes to acknowledge inspiration and assistance from Sam Kwan.
