ANNOUNCEMENTS
Transformation
An Exhibition by Krisztina Szabo, Shelia Amy Berlin & Estrella Lucero
Opening January 6-8pm, CCBC Gallery
This year’s winners of the Craft Council of BC’s student award, Krizstina Szabo, Shelia Amy Berlin, and Estrella Lucero make their debut as January 2011 begins. In Transformation, these three artists play with their common interest in stretching expectations and altering the familiar. Whether it be modified slightly, or drastically, they hope that the viewer will not only appreciate the skills of the artists, but also question the assumptions we make during daily life. Transformation will be at the Craft Council of British Columbia, 1386 Cartwright Street on Granville Island. Opening Reception is January 6th from 6 to 8 pm. The exhibition runs through to February 17th.
The work of these three new artists is as diverse as their personalities. It differs dramatically in scale- from Shelia’s tiny cast animals, to Estrella’s substantial pieces, but also in material- from Krisztina’s use of fiber, to Shelia and Estrella’s use of metal and stone. The work of each artist pushes the viewer to consider functionality within the world of craft. Though function speaks to the item’s practicality, it can also meet needs of the mind and spirit.
By choosing to enter the realm of the handmade, these new craft makers remind us of the importance of skill and visual appeal, but also that these pieces can evoke feelings, send us into reverie, or create memories. Be it Shelia’s small animals that encourage careful examination of social commentary, Krisztina’s dolls that provoke us to question why certain objects are designated to particular life stages, or Estrella’s sculptural pieces that marry the practicality of function with the beauty of design, the ideas over which to linger in this exhibition are limitless.
